It was April 2020. Tons of restrictions were in place making it difficult to get supplies. Manufacturers were closing down creating shortages. People were afraid of getting sick. Soap was hard to find. I couldn’t find it for sale anywhere. I have a family of six and our supply on hand was not going to last very long.

I started researching. I was already looking for ways to reduce synthetic chemicals in my life and this was a natural step for me. I found several sources explaining how to make soap and I decided making it was a good option. It didn’t look that hard. I like doing similar things with cooking and crafting and we were going to need to do something if our supply ran out before the craziness ended, which it did.

I ordered a start up kit and followed the instructions.

As I was making that first batch I knew two things:

1) I LOVED making soap, and

2) I knew I could do it better the second time around.

My first batch was good and I couldn’t wait to take it out of the molds. The molds recommended in the kit instructions were gladware containers, and that was a terrible idea. Seriously, after 10 days of trying to get it to unmold, I decided to cut the containers off the soap!

If you plan on trying to make soap save yourself the time and effort and just get these molds for loaf style soap, or these for premade bars, both are from amazon. These are the same molds that I have been using since my mishap and they are the ones I still use in my soap business. They are the most cost effective.

Anyway, I couldn’t stop thinking about my next batch of soap. I ordered more supplies, a cheese cutter like this one from amazon to cut the soap, and colorants from a few sources.

Another tip, not all colorants are the same, the best colors I have found can be had here. They do a fantastic job explaining the differences and what they can and cannot be used for!

Within a few weeks I had made enough soap to last my family over a year. As my family started using my homemade soap I noticed that it lasted much longer than the stuff I was buying previously and my skin felt better after using it compared to what I was using. Everyone that tried my soap agreed. I got tons of positive feedback and people started asking to buy some. After more research I started selling soap. If you’re interested in what I’ve created you can check it out and buy it in my shop here or click on the shop tab.
